Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was convicted on 4 August after authorities found cannabis oil in her luggage
Russian court sentenced US basketball star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison on Thursday (August 4) after finding her guilty of deliberately bringing cannabis-infused vape cartridges into Russia, a ruling that President Joe Biden called "unacceptable."
A judge said 31-year-old Brittney Griner illegally brought vape cartridges with cannabis oil into the country when she flew to Moscow earlier this year.
US basketball star Brittney Griner appears in court in Khimki, Russia, for a hearing in her trial for charges of drug smuggling. She was arrested at a Moscow airport in February for possessing vape cartridges with cannabis oil, as she traveled to to Russia to play club basketball with UMMC Ekaterinburg. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in a bid to find a way home for Griner as well as Paul Whelan, a former Marine jailed on espionage charges he denies.
