A critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine is to remain behind bars after losing an appeal against an eight-and-a-half-year sentence handed down in December 2022.
The US basketball player was convicted in Moscow on drug charges in August.
The 55-year-old disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for leading a decades-long effort to recruit and trap teenagers and women for sex, will appeal the sentence, says his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean. SOUNDBITE
A Moscow court throws out jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's appeal against a nine-year prison sentence that he and his allies condemn as politically motivated. Moscow City Court ruled to "leave the sentence without changes" and for it to enter into force immediately, meaning that Navalny will be transferred to a strict regime prison colony to serve out his term, after he was found guilty in March of embezzlement and contempt of court. A Moscow appeal court has upheld a prison sentence imposed on chief Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny after he returned to Russia from Germany last month. Judge Dmitry Balashov rejected Navalny's appeal of the February 2 ruling, which turned a 2014 suspended sentence on embezzlement charges into real jail time. IMAGES
