The International Olympic Committee said Thursday it had suspended Russia's national Olympic body with "immediate effect" for violating the territorial integrity of Ukraine's membership. SOUNDBITE
Olympic chief Thomas Bach says that a decision on Russian and Belarusian participation at next year's Paris Olympics will be taken "at the appropriate time". Athletes from both countries have faced differing sanctions from a multitude of sports since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year. SOUNDBITE
In a video address at a conference of sports ministers in London, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has called for a boycott of the 2024 Paris games over the possible participation of Russian athletes, says their presence would be a "manifestation of violence." SOUNDBITE
US says sports organizers should ensure that Russian and Belarusian athletes do not represent their countries if they are permitted to compete in a global sporting event. "The use of official state Russian, Belarusian flags, emblems and anthem should be prohibited as well," White House spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, tells reporter in a press conference at the White House.
