20 Years at Goodwood - The Home of Rolls-Royce, 2003-2023

Description

In 1997, BMW Group was presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to acquire Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. This was much more than just another business deal. Rolls-Royce is an institution, a name famous around the world, with a history going back to 1904. It is also a byword for excellence: brands and products across almost every industry aspire to be 'the Rolls-Royce of…'As the brand's new owner, BMW Group faced an immediate and daunting challenge: to create a new home for Rolls-Royce, befitting its status and heritage. Towns and cities all over Britain put themselves forward to be the chosen location, with the promise of investment and high-quality local jobs that would follow. It quickly became obvious that only one place would befit the marque – and the clients it was created to serve.

Each Rolls-Royce motor car is built by hand at the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and headquarters in Goodwood, England. Designed by architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw and merging effortlessly into the beautiful West Sussex countryside, the award-winning building was created to lower our environmental footprint. Built over four and a half years, the award-winning manufacturing facility opened its doors on 1 January 2003. Designed on a 20 x 20 metre grid with steel columns supporting roof lights, the main building is set two metres below the surrounding ground level, to blend into the landscape. The floor-to-ceiling windows run the length of the Assembly Hall, providing essential natural light for our craftspeople and – for visitors who come to Goodwood – a front-row view of the entire production line. We like to call it ‘the glass mile’.

  • Rolls-Royce - 2023 A year of success

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars enjoyed a highly successful year in 2023, with strong sales and demand for its products in markets worldwide, and Bespoke commissions at record levels. The company’s strong performance was once again underpinned by the uniqueness and diversity of its offer, particularly in respect of Bespoke personalisation and the marque’s unrivalled ability to meet and exceed clients’ ever-expanding expectations. The ongoing success and growth of the marque’s Bespoke capabilities – supported by the continuing expansion of the marque’s international Private Office network – resulted in more and higher value Bespoke commissions than ever before. Global sales of 6,032 motor cars were in line with internal expectations and Rolls-Royce’s status as an international luxury house, rather than a volume-driven manufacturer. All Rolls-Royce motor cars are hand-built at the marque’s home in Goodwood, UK and each one has elements of Bespoke. While the hugely popular Wraith and Dawn models ceased production as planned in 2023, the year was most notable for the start of production and sales of Rolls-Royce Spectre, with the very first client deliveries taking place in the autumn. Following its triumphant public reveal in October 2022, the first all-electric Rolls-Royce in history has attracted enormous interest, particularly among younger clients; this demand has translated into orders extending into 2025, laying a firm foundation for the marque’s bold, all-electric future. The company’s long-term focus on Bespoke, and the growing ambition of client commissions, is reflected in the ever-increasing scope and sophistication of Rolls-Royce’s design, technology, engineering and craftsmanship. During 2023, the company announced substantial new investment in the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood to enhance capacity and capabilities for Bespoke and to support the growth of Coachbuild. To meet clients’ growing demand for increasingly detailed and extensive Bespoke commissions, Rolls-Royce expanded its Private Office network further: following Dubai, which opened in 2022, Shanghai opened in autumn 2023 and the marque confirmed its plans to open Private Offices in Seoul and North America in 2024. The global Rolls-Royce Private Office network enables a new level of client engagement with the marque and is already delivering a significant uplift in Bespoke demand.

  • Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost re-enacts triumphant London-Edinburgh run 110 years on

History literally repeated itself recently, as Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost 1701 re-enacted its astonishing run in the 1911 London-Edinburgh Trial. The car, designed as an 'Experimental Speed Car', won the original event locked in top gear for the entire 799-mile return trip between the two capitals. Given the primitive state of Britain's Edwardian roads, its average speed of 19.59 mph was highly impressive – and its then unheard‑of fuel efficiency of over 24 mpg even more so. To prove that the car had not been modified in any way, it achieved 78.2 mph on a half-mile speed test conducted immediately after the Trial; it also became the first Rolls-Royce to exceed 100 mph in a later test at the fabled Brooklands circuit in Surrey. The re-enactment was as faithful to the 1911 event as possible. The car, now a priceless collector's item and wearing registration R-1075, departed from the Pall Mall headquarters of the Royal Automobile Club (which oversaw the original Trial) at 06.00 on Sunday 5 September 2021, then travelled to Edinburgh on a route that followed the old Great North Road as closely as practicable – locked in top gear just as it was 110 years before.
