Brazilian President Refuses to Step Down Amid Scandal

Description

Despite facing growing calls for his resignation amid a corruption scandal, Brazilian President Michel Temer said Monday that will not step down even if he is formally indicted by the Supreme Court. In an interview with Folha de S. Paulo, Brazil's largest newspaper, Temer said, "I will not resign. Oust me if you want, but if I stepped down, I would be admitting guilt." Last week, a three-year corruption investigation came to a head after the disclosure of a recording that appeared to show Temer condoning the payment of hush money to a jailed lawmaker. Brazil's Supreme Court is now expected to decide this week whether to suspend the investigation at Temer's request.
