'Next Generation' Not Too Keen On 'Discovery' Cameos

Description

The cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation is celebrating the show’s 30th anniversary this year. The group doesn’t seem too eager to jump back into the Star Trek universe. Star Trek: Discovery will be the first new Star Trek television series is over a decade. That is roughly the same situation Star Trek: The Next Generation was in when it debuted. The Star Trek: Discovery producers have stated that they’ve reached out to many franchise veterans about possibly appearing in a cameo or guest role. The Next Generation crew, though, doesn’t seem overly eager about the idea.

  • 'Star Trek Discovery' Season 2 Features Iconic Starships

Screenrant reports the U.S.S. Enterprise is appearing in season 2 of 'Star Trek Discovery'! But the Klingon D7 class battle cruiser also appeared in the 'Discovery' season 2 trailer at New York Comic Con. Bryan Fuller, the original showrunner, had Klingons looking equally different in his original pitch. Some of this may have been due to rights issues with CBS. It has been confirmed that the Klingons will have hair now, justified by that they go bald during wars, and let it grow during peace.

  • Will 'Star Trek: Discovery' Get "Reset"?

Star Trek: Discovery might have a weird place in the franchise's canon, but its showrunners are confident that its plot will stick. In a recent interview with TrekMovie, showrunner Aaron Harberts addressed the series' place in the prime timeline, and whether or not a "reset button" might retcon the entire plot out of existence. But as Harberts revealed, the series' events will flow right into the prime timeline, with as much accuracy as possible. "In term of canon, we want to make sure that all of that stuff tracks." Harberts explained. "So whatever you pull up in Picard’s computer needs to be correct by the time we end our run." The series has already gone through quite a few hoops to explain away the differences in canon, from the new Starfleet uniforms to the vastly different appearance of the Klingons. Still, more questions seem to get raised every time one is answered, such as that massive spoiler that Jonathan Frakes recently dropped at a concention. Another subject of mystery amongst Discovery viewers has been the series' protagonist, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). With her being Spock's adopted sister, some have wondered how the series will work around her never having been mentioned before in the franchise. Harberts reassured that it will all be sorted out in one way or another. "So far we know we have never heard about her." Harberts added. "We have never heard Spock and Sarek speak about her. So it is our job to make sure that what we have seen, still holds water." Star Trek: Discovery debuted last week on CBS All Access. The first episode of the new series, “The Vulcan Hello,” aired on CBS and was watched by an audience of nearly 10 million. The premiere also led to a record number of CBS All Access sign-ups, and gained the attention of many internet pirates. A new episode of Star Trek: Discovery, titled “Context is for Kings,” will stream tonight on CBS All Access at 8:30 p.m. ET.

  • 'Star Trek: Discovery' Creators Comment On Jonathan Frakes' Spoiler

The showrunners for Star Trek: Discovery have a rather diplomatic response to the spoiler that Jonathan Frakes let slip concerning an upcoming episode of the series. In September, Jonathan Frakes, the Star Trek: The Next Generation star turned director who will helm an upcoming episode of Star Trek: Discovery, mentioned at a convention that Star Trek: Discovery would be visiting the mirror universe first introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Mirror, Mirror” and further explored by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Enterprise. When asked if there was truth to Frakes assertion, showrunners Aaron Harbers and Gretchen Berg neither denied nor confirmed the spoiler, but gave something of a tease of things to come. “We’ve certainly been inspired by all of the series and...we are existing in the world of the other series,” Berg told Trek Movie. “So, there will be a lot of nods to things that seem familiar to fans of Trek.” Star Trek: Discovery is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, set ten years before Captain Kirk took command of the Enterprise. If the crew of the Discovery does encounter the mirror universe, that would make them the first Starfleet officers to make contact with the alternate dimension (Star Trek: Enterprise took place a century before Star Trek: The Original Series, but the episodes of Enterprise that dealt with the mirror universe were set entirely in that universe, with no contact between the mirror universe and the crew of the Enterprise NX-01). In the minds of many fans, that would be just one more matter of canon that Star Trek: Discovery needs to reconcile. Star Trek: Discovery debuted last week on CBS All Access. ET.
