CNN reports seven million GM pickups and SUVs worldwide are being recalled. The recall centers on a defect in Japanese airbags made by now-bankrupt Takata. The defect caused the bags to explode, spraying shrapnel through the vehicle. The GM vehicles have airbags also made by Takata, which are linked to at least 17 deaths in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered the US recall on Monday. NHTSA rejected GM's longstanding argument that this version of the airbags didn't need to be replaced.
People who have recovered from COVID-19 are safe from reinfection with the virus for at least six months. The data is according to a study posted online Friday by researchers at Oxford University in England. To date, studies have found that antibodies against the new coronavirus offer varying levels of immunity from infection. According to UPI, some researchers have found that immunity may be only 90 days in some people. Several cases of reinfection have been reported, in which people with confirmed COVID-19 recover and then test positive. Researchers caution that data from the study has not been published in a medical journal or peer-reviewed.
The road to the Oval Office is fraught with peril and stained with blood, sweat, and tears. But once there, the US President makes out reasonably well. According to Business Insider, the president earns an annual salary of $400,000, as well as unlimited access to Air Force One, Marine One, and Camp David. He and his family are also looked after by over 100 White House staffers, including top-flight pastry chefs, maids, landscapers, plumbers, and a head housekeeper. While the president is never really 'off,' he and his family can relax and watch movies in the White House media room, and work off steam in a number of sports areas. Finally, US presidents get free healthcare and a generous $200,000 annual pension--for life!
Halloween is fun, but it can also lead to scary financial situations, so make sure you cloak yourself with enough homeowners' insurance coverage. According to Business Insider, if you're charging admission to a party at your house, you may need additional coverage. Halloween is notorious for property theft, so make sure your insurance covers your belongings--especially recent purchases. Make sure your home's exterior is safe. Don't overload electrical outlets with decorations, and make sure your walkways are clean, secure, and well-lit. Finally, extra coverage will probably cost extra, too, but the cheapest provider isn't always the best. Check customer satisfaction rankings, like J.D. Power's.
Meet Juan David Hernandez, an 11-year-old inventor who is worried about crime in his native Mexico. He came up with the idea of designing a safety backpack, which features a bulletproof plate, a GPS tracker and an alarm button tucked away in the bag's strap, which can be activated in case of an attack. Juan David's safety backpack is one small way to raise awareness about organised drug gangs and crime in his home city of Tamaulipas.
