Researchers at the University of Washington just successfully tested Wi-Fi charging. A recent report in Wired detailed how the researchers equipped a variety of devices with sensors to take Wi-Fi signals from a router and turn them into DC power. The team wanted the system to integrate with pre-existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, so they gave an off-the-shelf Asus router a software update to make it work as both a wireless power source and as a conventional Wi-Fi router. Impressive numbers for sure, but they're hampered by the Federal Communications Commission's limit of one-watt power outputs on wireless routers
Mercedes-Benz announces far-reaching plans to launch a global high-power charging network across North America, Europe, China and other key markets. It will begin to be built this year in the US and Canada, followed by other regions around the globe. The aim is to have the full network in place before the end of the decade, when Mercedes-Benz intends to go all-electric wherever market conditions allow. The Mercedes-Benz high-power charging network will greatly enhance customers’ charging experience, accelerate the journey towards the all-electric future and create a global infrastructure asset with future value-creation potential. The Mercedes-Benz charging hubs will be located in key cities and urban population centres, close to major arteries, convenient retail and service destinations, including participating Mercedes‑Benz dealership sites.The company believes this strategic move will significantly enhance the usability and convenience of its new generation of electric vehicles, differentiate the Mercedes-Benz ownership experience and accelerate the EV transformation. The charging network will focus first and foremost on Mercedes-Benz customers, who will enjoy preferential access via a reservation function and other benefits. However, it will also be open to drivers of all other brands with compatible technology. This comprehensive initiative, alongside ongoing support for shared networks such as IONITY, also aims to drive global adoption of electric mobility.
The capability of the Extended-Range plug-in hybrids is signified in their performance and efficiency. Certified data confirms the PHEVs will offer 113km (70 miles) of electric driving according to WLTP standards with CO2 emissions as low as 18g/km, which translates into a real-world all-electric range of 88km (54 miles) – exceeding initial estimates.Alongside the Extended-Range Plug-in Hybrid models, which blend near-silent EV-only driving with effortless performance across the P510e and P440e powertrains, New Range Rover is also available with a choice of efficient mild-hybrid six-cylinder petrol and diesels, plus an all-new V8. Customers also benefit from the choice of four-, five- and seven-seat interiors across Standard and Long Wheelbase body designs. A pure-electric Range Rover – the first all-electric Land Rover – will join the line-up in 2024.New Range Rover is available in SE, HSE and Autobiography models, with an exclusive First Edition available during the first year of production. Both Standard (SWB) and Long Wheelbase (LWB) body designs are available with five seats, while the New Range Rover LWB model offers enhanced comfort for rear-seat occupants.Previously envisioned through the SVAutobiography family, the SV flagship model builds on New Range Rover’s breathtaking modernity, peerless refinement and unmatched capability with SV-specific design details and material choices throughout. Wireless charging capability has been upgraded from 5 watts to 15 watts for faster device charging. The 2023 Palisade supports the latest version of Hyundai Digital Key. Digital Key 2 Touch allows owners to leave their car key at home and use an iPhone, Apple Watch, or Samsung Galaxy smartphone to lock, unlock, and start their vehicle. After the car key has been added to Apple Wallet or Samsung Pass, users can simply hold the supported device near the door handle to lock or unlock the car. Touching an Apple Watch near or placing the phone in the wireless charger and then pressing the start button allows the driver to start the Palisade’s engine. Apple Wallet or Samsung Pass also allows secure sharing of keys with family and friends. The 2023 Palisade is also the first Hyundai vehicle to offer Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Customers with cellular connectivity will be able to provide a hotspot that allows others to browse the internet, stream videos or music and more – just like at home.
