So Much For HIPAA: Medical Records Of 145,000 Rehab Patients Leaked Online

Description

Data breaches and leaks are bad, but some are far more sensitive and potentially damaging than others. Such is the case where some 145,000 patients of an addiction recovery treatment center have had their protected health information exposed. Security researcher Justin Paine is the director of trust and safety at Cloudflare. In a post on his personal blog on Friday, Paine said that he unearthed a wealth of personally identifiable information that was left publicly exposed by Levittown, Pennsylvania, addiction recovery treatment center Steps To Recovery. In total, some 4.91 million documents were accessible to virtually anyone who knew where to look. He said the files both identified the patients and the types of treatment they’d received. Additional information about patients was also easy to come by, simply by using Google.
