Mass floods and heatwaves hit Asia: the role of global warming in extreme weather events

    Et si le caca des manchots pouvait régler la crise climatique ? Non, non, ce n’est pas une blague : les excréments de manchot, appelé le guano, pourrait participer activement à la protection du climat. C’est ce que révèle une étude menée par des scientifiques de l’Université d’Helsinki. L’étude publiée le 22 mai dans la revue Nature, Communications Earth & Environment explique que le guano libère de l’ammoniac. En réagissant avec des gazs contenant du soufre, l’ammoniac peut accroitre la formation de nuage. Ces nuages agissent comme des couches isolantes, ce qui permet de réduire la température à la surface de la banquise et donc de freiner la fonte des glaces qui met en péril l’habitat de ces animaux. Pour étudier cet effet, les chercheurs ont mesuré la concentration d’ammoniac dans l’air d’un site proche de la base de Marambio en Antarctique entre janvier et mars 2023. Ils ont pu constater que lorsque le vent soufflait en direction d’une colonie de 60 000 manchots Adélie située quelques kilomètres plus loin, la concentration d’amoniac atteignait plus de 1000 fois la valeur de référence. Et même après la migration des manchots, cette concentration restait plus de 100 fois supérieur. Comme quoi, certains excréments peuvent être utile à la planète.
