Intel’s upcoming Skylake processors are going to be something special. One reason: they’ll be the last new Intel CPUs to support Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, in accordance with a new policy from Microsoft. Going forward, Microsoft says that they’ll only support new silicon on the latest and greatest versions of the Windows operating system. Windows lead Terry Myerson notes that doing so “enables [Microsoft] to focus on deep integration between Windows and the silicon”. It’s also about making sure that a Windows PC can take full advantage of a processor’s abilities, and vice versa. They’re phasing the change in now, starting with Intel’s Skylake chips. Not all Skyake-based systems will receive any sort of long-term attention from Microsoft. These systems will continue to receive Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 support until the middle of July 2017. After that, Microsoft says, they should be upgraded to Windows 10 to continue receiving support.
At Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 event Tuesday, the company announced a new gadget: the Microsoft Display Dock. With this new device, you can use your Windows 10 phone as a PC. Plug your phone into your desktop, and use the keyboard and mouse to control your Windows 10 apps on the computer screen. Easily switch tasks, access your mail or even edit a PowerPoint on your computer screen, all while your phone is driving this whole operation.

Many people would rather get a Windows 7 computer over Windows 10, even though there’s plenty to like about the 10. Those people are about to get some bad news. A few days ago was Microsoft’s official date to stop selling Windows 7 and 8.1 licenses to computer manufacturers. This doesn’t mean that all Windows 7 licenses are going to disappear, though. The inventory will be at plenty of retailers for awhile. Some may still have new desktops and laptops with Windows 7 installed. Support for Windows 7 doesn’t get cut off until January 2020, so those Windows 10 haters will be covered.
Microsoft might be making one final push to scare you into upgrading to Windows 10 while it’s still free, but there’s a silver lining to that annoying cloud. Yes, come July 29th, even though a steep $119 price increase is on the cards, Microsoft has said that they will discontinue all that bothersome “Get Windows 10” business that keeps popping up on your Windows 7 or 8.1 machine. WinBeta’s Zac Bowden was curious what would happen once the free upgrade program came to an end, so he contacted Microsoft for clarification. According to Geek.com, Microsoft responded by saying the "nagware" “will be disabled and eventually removed from PCs worldwide.”
